Snow, Rain and Ice in Tenerife???

If you live or holiday in Tenerife you will enjoy a wonderful climate all year round…the weather conditions differ dependant upon your choice of location.

The warmest part of Tenerife can be found in the South, so for those of you looking for hot sunshine and beach holidays…head to the southern resorts…there can be as much as a 5 to10°C degrees difference between the cooler greener North and the warmer South.

Most people elect to live in the North as the temperatures in the South during the summer periods can be stifling. August is usually the hottest month, with temperatures reaching the mid 30’s.

The Canarian Climate produces unusual weather conditions: during certain parts of the year, you can be sat sizzling on hot beaches and at the same time, take in the wonderful view of our snow capped Mount Teide.

It’s Mid-March now and we are experiencing an average daily temperature of 17°C. Days are unsettled right now, a mix of rain, hot sunshine, we have snow forecast on Mt Teide and to our surprise snow fell on the village of El Rosario near La Laguna 900 – 1000m. It hasn’t fallen that low in over 25 years…Roads will be closed again as a precaution due to the risk of black ice. We can expect more drenchings during this week but the weather office promise more settled weather for the weekend…

Throughout the month of March daytime temperatures will generally reach highs of around 18°C that's about 65°F. At night the average minimum temperature drops down to around 11°C, that's 51°F.

In recent times the highest recorded temperature in March has been 30°C that's 86°F, with the lowest recorded temperature -1°C, about 31°F.

Today, most of the Canary Isles are on weather alerts…locals in Gran Canaria were amazed to see the arrival of snow. La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera have experienced thunderstorms this week ,with heavy downpours as a massive belt of hail and rain arrived bringing flooding to several parts. These unsettled weather conditions are expected to continue over the next few days.

Last year, the Canaries were on numerous alerts throughout the year…if it wasn’t for the aggressive storms we had ripping through the islands, it was for the high temperatures experienced during the summer. For those of you who already live in the Canaries, alerts have become part of our routine, this is a precautionary measure to ensure everyone is aware, to stay safe and take necessary actions…it certainly isn’t a reason not travel to our beautiful islands.

The infrequent wind and rain can cause havoc here on the island with little or no drainage the streets become flooded quite regularly. Last years high winds ripped through Gazebos, uprooted trees and rocks tumbled…there was significant damage to houses and cars, especially in Santa Cruz.

It is important to be covered by insurance during this adverse weather. If you would like a no obligation quotation, contact Sunway Tenerife who are Agents for Liberty Insurance…we will be only too pleased to advise you on the best options available.
