Easter celebrations in Tenerife
Easter wouldn’t be the same without chocolate covered eggs and we´re sure there will be thousands consumed over the next week or so... If your preference is NOT to over do the chocolate this Easter, here are some ideas of what Tenerife has to offer:
From 18 to April 24 - Tenerife has an approximate population of some 600,000, a large percentage are predominantly Roman Catholic, with only small minorities of Protestants. For this reason, the Easter celebrations are not just about Eggs… Celebrations take place in every municipality of the Island. Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, Los Realejos, Icod, Garachico, Arona, Adeje and with more intensity in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
From 2 to April 24 San Cristóbal - La Laguna is classed as the religious capital of Tenerife. Here the locals will celebrate Easter with special devotion. During eight days the brotherhoods, the processional 'Pasos' will walk in silence meditating along the streets of the city. You will find a host of activities and religious acts in the various churches of La Laguna.
From 11 to April 15 - ‘Tales of the World’ Festival. Arona - International Meeting of storytellers (Encuentro de Narradores y Contadores de Cuentos del Mundo. Have you ever wanted to find witches, princesses, and pirates of the five continents, Hip Hop tales, writing workshops and much more!
On Friday, 22 Abril - Live Theatre, Adeje
Every year on Easter’s Holy Friday, this popular performance draws thousands of people from all corners of the Island. If you haven’t seen ‘LA PASSIÓN’, it certainly comes highly recommended. Last years record of over 20,000 spectators enjoyed this Easter show where the last hours of the life of Jesus Christ are acted out. This is not for the faint hearted. This is realism at its best where make believe acting even simulates bloody scenes such as Christ's crucifixion…it can get gory, but it is warranted and all in the sake of art.
Blood, Sweat and tears – this is what it takes to make a spectacular show like this work. There are over 300 actors involved in the making of this play. As you can imagine, with Sets, Costumes, Make-up and Music etc there is a huge amount of time and hard work going into the making of amazing show and these skillful actors are nothing less than totally professional throughout. All are volunteers and are not paid for their contribution, nor can you see their names listed in any of the publications.
The open arena of the Easter plays is in Adeje's main streets Calle Grande and Calle Jaricas.
