Carnaval is here! The biggest party in Tenerife

It´s that time of year again where we get out our costumes and prepare to party in the streets of Santa Cruz! Yes...it´s Carnaval time again in Tenerife- the second largest Carnaval in the world.

The festivities are already in full swing and continue until Sunday 21st February. There are fireworks most days (if you haven´t seen a fireworks display in Tenerife, then you are in for a treat - they are spectacular!) and a large fairground with rides and amusements for adults and children alike. Most evenings there is a band playing with dancing under the stars until the early hours of the morning. It is traditional to don costumes for the night concerts and these outfits are as diverse as they are incredible. It is not difficult to find costumes at this time of year as they are sold everywhere!

Every day will feature performances, events, parades, competitions and music but below you will find some events of special interest.

Tuesday 16th February 2010 - This is the big day event. A large procession of decorated floats followed by costumed dancers takes to the streets of Santa Cruz to music. The atmosphere is electric and this is well worth watching.....just ensure you get there early to get a good spot!

Wednesday 17th February 2010 - The buriel of the sardine which starts at 21.00. This event
consists of a thirty-foot paper mache fish being carried through the streets of Santa Cruz while being mourned by male "widows" in miniskirts and fishnets. The buriel of the sardine is celebrated as a mourning as catholics can not eat meat during lent and therefore should not hunt, this is therefore a time when one should not catch sardines. It is a mourning of the denial of a good food source. Following the "mourning" there is dancing on the streets to live salsa and merengue bands and another fireworks display!

Saturday 20th February 2010 - This day featurs a whole days worth of live concerts in numerous venues across Santa Cruz. There will be a whole host of performers of varing music genres. Last year Craig David performed!
The children´s carnaval procesion also takes place on this day.

Sunday 21st February 2010 - The last day which will continue to include a whole day of performances, celebrations, fireworks and possibly the begining of a sore head after weeks of partying! So will we see you there???? Take a look at a brief clip of last years Carniaval if you need more convincing!
